The Market For Matt Holliday: "You'll never guess who Scott Boras is comparing free agent Matt Holliday to? Another Boras client who signed a $180 million deal last winter - Mark Teixeira. "These guys are blue-collar superstars. They don't hit 50 home runs, but they're complete players. They can give you something without swinging a bat."" I see Holliday going to the Mets. New York is coming off of a horrendous year offensively because of injuries and their current left fielder Gary Sheffield is not going to last another year. [LA Times, via The Big Lead]

Did the Mets Make a Good Trade For Once? Jeff FrancoeurIt sure seems that way. During his time with the New York Mets, Jeff Francoeur is hitting .305 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. He's been a very nice fill-in player because of all of the injuries, so his value increases a little bit for that. In fact, Frenchy's performance has "won" the Mets this deal because the player he was dealt for, Ryan Church, isn't doing so hot. Since joining the Braves, Church's average has gone from .280 to .241 and he hasn't been able to get into the line-up on a regular basis. (0)(12377)

Obvious Joke: Barry Bonds’ head would fit into that helmet.

Even Gary Sheffield is Embarrassed By the Mets

Gary SheffieldThe New York Mets are having an abysmal season. Their four best players, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, have all spent time on the DL, and their best pitcher, Johan Santana, leads the league in “tough losses”.

I guess the one bright spot of the season for the Mets would be when Gary Sheffield hit his 500th career home run at Citi Field. While Sheffield should be thankful that the Mets gave him a chance after the Tigers cut him, Gary is instead asking the team to release him.

As of 6:30 p.m., one of the sources said, Mets officials and Sheffield were in discussions on how to move forward. Mets pitcher Tim Redding actually said he heard Sheffield had been released. But a Mets official told the Post that was inaccurate and that Sheffield had not been released. [NY Post] Continue reading…

Bad Day For Baseball Players: David Wright, Ian Kinsler, and Hiroki Kuroda All Get Hit In Head

First Up Was David Wright.

Then Ian Kinsler of our Rangers. This made us particularly angry.

And then Kuroda on a comebacker. This one was probably worse because he didn’t have a helmet and it was going faster than 90 MPH.

Forget a Salary Cap in Baseball, Just Switch Up the Divisions

As The Big Lead has pointed out many times this season, the big market teams are destroying the standings right now. Of the top seven teams salary wise, only the New York Mets are not realistically in their division or wild card race. Here is how the rest of those teams stack up:

1. [...]

The Best Baseball Players No One In the World is Talking About: Two NL West 3rd Basemen

Buried in the western part of the United States are two fantastic third baseman that nobody seems to be talking about. One plays for a team that is very much in contention for the NL Wild Card while the other hasn’t played a meaningful game standings wise in a couple of months.

Pablo Sandoval [...]

The Trade Deadline Turned Out to Be a Holliday for the St. Louis Cardinals

Though they did not make a move on July 31st, the St. Louis Cardinals received a gift at the Trade Deadline this season when they acquired Matt Holliday from the Oakland Athletics.

Holliday was one of the best hitters in the league in 2007 when he was with the Rockies. His .340 average, 36 [...]

Is Roy Halladay This Year’s CC Sabathia?

Two mainstream media sites are reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays are maintaining offers for their ace, Roy Halladay.

Halladay has been dominant in Toronto for the past seven seasons and has established himself as a top five pitcher in the league since then. However, at 32 years of age, there seems to be [...]
