NL Rookie to Watch: Tommy Hanson

tommy-hansonAs the MLB season is just a few days away its time to take a look at what upcoming stars you should watch out for in the Rookie of the Year race. Today, we will be talking about Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Tommy Hanson.

Tommy Hanson has been called this years David Price by many pro scouts, with some going as far as saying he is already better than Price.

Hanson has an above average fastball and a filthy overhand curveball with a tight spin that he uses as his out pitch. His change up continues to improve, so his repertoire is starting to look more diverse. At 6-foot-6, his mound presence is very dominating and imposing. He isn’t afraid to challenge his opponents, which is a good quality for some. However, Tommy relies to much on his fastball at times, so it is fairly easy for opponents to figure him out.

Hanson pitched in Single-A and Double-A last season, posting an 11-5 combined record. Tommy was moved up to Double-A after starting the season with a 3-1 record and .90 ERA in Single-A.

So far this spring, Hanson has pitched in 4 games, racking up 14.2 innings. Throughout those innings, Tommy has only allowed 14 hits and has maintained an ERA of 2.45. Hanson will have a shot to get into the majors about a month into the season when Tom Glavine inevitably gets hurt. He is not really a strong contender for the Rookie of the Year award, but he will make a big impact in the fute and it will be fun to see him in the early stages of his career.
