Chicago Cubs Ace Carlos Zambrano is going to miss the 2009 World Baseball Classic so he doesn’t aggravate his right shoulder. This is a huge hit to the Venezuela pitching staff, as they recently lost Johan Santana’s commitment as well.
Zambrano has also developed an eye infection. From MLB.com:
“The doctor gave me some eye drops, like four different kinds,” Zambrano said. “I’m using them right now. For three weeks, I have to use the drops and see what happens to my vision. I feel much better, and the most important thing is I’m here and happy for this weather and happy to have Spring Training.”
Carlos was also asked how he felt about not being able to compete for his country:
“Believe me, I want to represent my country, I want to be out there,” Zambrano said. “But if you can’t do something, you can’t force things because it can get worse. We’ll see what happens.”
This loss is a serious issue for the team, as they now lack depth and power in the front of the staff.
The Venezuelan rotation will now be anchored by Felix Hernandez, Anibal Sanchez, Carlos Silva and Victor Zambrano.
