Reading the Internet: 1.27.10

Reading the Internet” will give excerpts or links to stories, videos or pictures that are popular in the sports world for that day. The title of the article was inspired by Florida Marlins manager Freddy Gonzalez when he said “I read the newspaper…..and those others, uh, reading the internet…” in an interview on the Baseball Show on ESPN Radio.

Here are today’s headline:

Heartbreaking loss for Kentucky. Perhaps it has more positive outcomes than negative. They had little a chance to go undefeated the entire season and they are still the best team in the country in my mind.

And how about the game Devan Downey had? A 5-foot-9 guard with no fear at all when attacking the basket that can will a team to victory by himself. On three straight plays, Downey dribbled down the shot clock and put up a ridiculous shot to put his shoe on Kentucky’s throat. He finished with 30 points (29 shots), 10 free throws, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

More on UK’s loss.

Ben Sheets will be back in the majors this season. He signed a one-year deal worth a lofty $10 million with the Oakland Athletics. The A’s had one of the youngest pitching staffs in baseball last season, so adding a veteran won’t hurt, especially one who has shown spurts of brilliance like Sheets. But $10 million? For the A’s to give that much money to a pitcher that isn’t a sure thing to be healthy is puzzling to say the least.

Veteran slugger Jim Thome signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Minnesota Twins. Perhaps the Twins saw the need for an extra power bat after Justin Morneau got hurt at the end of last season?

I won’t go much further than this: Nude Greg Oden photos on the internet. That’s scary.

Land O’ Lakers, the Lakers blog for the fairly new ESPN Los Angeles, with the recap of last night’s game. Kobe went off for 26 points on 15 shots with eight assists. Next up for LA are the Pacers, which should be a very easy win if they play up to their abilities.

Does this 27-point Knick victory over Minnesota mean the Dallas Mavericks are 77 points better than the T’Wolves? These are the things that cross my mind on a regular basis.

Johan Santana threw off a mound yesterday, which is a big step in the rehabilitation process. I smell a Cy Young type season out of Johan with a full season in Citi Field.

On tonight’s docket: Three good games at 6 pm. LeBron and Kobe could get 50 against the Timberwolves and Pacers respectively and Dwyane Wade takes on Chris Bosh north of the border. Five pretty good late games, too. I’ll be watching Oklahoma City and Chicago most of the time. The Nuggets will take on the hustle and muscle Houston Rockets, Atlanta will be in San Antonio and likely give them their fourth straight home loss, the Jazz will play the Trail Blazers, and Chris Paul will get to showcase his talent against the Warriors.

Attacking the Boards should be pretty interesting.
