“Reading the Internet” will give excerpts or links to stories, videos or pictures that are popular in the sports world for that day. The title of the article was inspired by Florida Marlins manager Freddy Gonzalez when he said “I read the newspaper…..and those others, uh, reading the internet…” in an interview on the Baseball Show on ESPN Radio.
Here are today’s headline:
After some suggested that Allen Iverson should relinquish his starting spot in the All-Star Game, Iverson said playing in it was a “no brainer.” Honestly, I don’t want him to give it up, because that means Vince Carter would get the gig since he was the third highest voter.
The Phillies made a couple of moves yesterday: Jose Contreras was added to bolster their bullpen (a possibly good move) and they resigned multi-talented outfielder Shane Victorino to a three-year, $22 million deal.
This week, the NBA will lay down the law with Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton with suspensions.
The Kansas City Royals pulled Rick Ankiel from their Missouri counter part with a one-year, $3.25 million deal. He had a down year last season (.231/11/38) after launching 25 bombs in ’08.
Last night, 10 NBA players pledged to donate $1,000 for every point they scored that night in partnership with the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Derrick Rose donated the most cash with a nice 32-point performance. Pau Gasol had 20 against the Knicks. The funniest contributor? Mike Miller, who poured in a whopping three points.
Chris Kaman isn’t a big fan of Pau Gasol: “I don’t think Gasol should be in it at all,” Kaman said when asked if he would be disappointed if Gasol, who starts at power forward for the Lakers, is slid over to be the backup center when West coaches vote for All-Star reserves. “He’s only played like 20 games (he played Thursday in his 25th out of 42 Lakers games) this year. I think there should be a number of games you should play. I think you should have to play like 80 percent of the games. It shouldn’t be 50 percent (of games a player has logged) over a guy who plays 90 percent and who has better numbers. Not just me. Zach Randolph, a power forward, he has better numbers (than Gasol). But he’s not on the Lakers.”
The Knicks invited Phil Jackson, who was a power forward for them in the 1969-1970 season, to their 40th anniversary celebration. He declined.
Football is still king in this country in terms of numbers: “Sunday’s Cowboys-Vikings game attracted 37.7 million viewers, the most-watched program on television since last February’s Super Bowl.”
Vikings dynamic receiver Percy Harvin, is questionable for the NFC Championship game.
On today’s docket: some college hoops this afternoon and then the match-up between Kevin Durant and LeBron James later this evening.

@generic: Don’t forget that Anthony Parker foul that wasn’t called.
