The Houston Rockets and Tracy McGrady have agreed to part ways, according to a report by SI’s Chris Mannix.
McGrady was sent home before the Rockets game against New Jersey last week after complaining about playing time. McGrady missed the first 23 games of the season while recovering from microfracture knee surgery.
McGrady averaged 3.2 points in 7.7 minutes in six games with Houston this season but is expected to be a sought after commodity because of his $23 million expiring contract, the highest salary in the NBA this season.
It is likely that McGrady will return to Chicago to work out with trainer Tim Grover, who helped McGrady rehab his knee in the off-season.
The Rockets are said to be looking for a trade as we speak for McGrady who is a high valued target for many teams around the league. Now, whether or not those teams want him for what he can do on the floor or what his contract brings in salary relief is yet to be seen.
I think McGrady goes to the Miami Heat for Mario Chalmers and Daequan Cook. Does this trade make sense basketball wise? No, but it gives the Heat a whole lot of cap space this summer for them to go out and add either LeBron, Chris Bosh, or Carlos Boozer to their current nucleus of Dwyane Wade, Michael Beasley and Jermaine O’Neal.
Other places I could see McGrady going: Chicago (cap relief, could offer Tyrus Thomas), New York (obviously cap relief) or to the Magic to play alongside his cousin Vince Carter (just because).
No doubt McGrady will end up on one of the other 26 teams because I did not list them here.
